Its
strategic location on the Delaware River drew George Washington
to Bucks County after the disastrous Long Island campaign of 1776.
The Delaware proved a natural barricade, behind which Washington
planned his successful surprise attack on the Hessian garrison
across the river at Trenton, New Jersey. On
Christmas Night, 1776, George Washington and the Continental
Army crossed the icy Delaware River. Today, Washington Crossing
Historic Park hosts a plethora of historic and cultural events
and attractions.
Spend the day in Washington Crossing Historic Park and experience
a 19th-century village of Taylorsville, which lends visitors a glimpse
of the Bucks County of yesterday.
Make sure to visit the Van
Sant Covered Bridge. Built in 1870 and also known as "Beaver
Dam Bridge," this bridge crosses Pidcock Creek. You'll find
this bridge close to Bowman's Hill and the Thompson-Neeley House
in Washington Crossing Historic Park.
For a more academic tour, one might take in the David
Library of the American Revolution. Home to over 40,000 volumes
of the Revolutionary War, the library offers a view of the conflict
that no other library can boast: The English. Additionally, the
collection is devoted to the study of American history circa 1750
to 1800 and is now increasing its prominence in the French and Indian
War.
