The Culture of Doylestown

Doylestown is home to quite a few unique, world-class cultural facilities. Culture is one of Doylestown’s community foundations. The town offers many music, dance, and fine art studios that offer instruction and training. There are a number of interesting, and famous museums in Doylestown.

The Mercer Museum is a five-story masonry “castle,” offering a unique perspective on American craftsmanship before mechanization. The museum is a National Historic Landmark; it was constructed in 1916. The Mercer Museum houses 50,000 tools of more than 60 early American crafts and trades. Walk into the Central Court and see a Conestoga wagon, whaling boats, carriages and antique fire engines suspended overhead.

Bucks County owns and maintains an extensive natural area on the grounds of the Fonthill Museum and Tile Works in Doylestown. Walking trails weave through the immaculate woodlands that make up the grounds.

Fonthill was Henry Mercer’s home, and was built between 1908 and 1912. The museum boasts 44 rooms, 18 fireplaces, 32 stairwells, and more than 200 windows. The interior walls, floors, and ceilings are elaborately adorned with an incredible array of Mercer's original handcrafted tiles.

The Moravian Pottery & Tile Works is another National Historic Landmark. The building is a working history museum. Handmade tiles are still produced in a manner similar to that developed by the pottery's founder and builder, Henry Chapman Mercer.

The James A. Michener Art Museum is another museum found in Doylestown. It is located across the street from the Mercer Museum. The Michener Museum opened in 1988 as a non-profit cultural institution dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting the art and cultural heritage of the Bucks County region. The museum was once the Bucks County jail, and is made of 19th century old stone. The Michener Museum offers an internationally renowned art collection as well as a wing dedicated to Bucks County artists.

James A. Michener Art Museum - In 1988, the James A. Michener Art Museum opened as an independent, non-profit cultural institution dedicated to preserving, interpreting and exhibiting the art and cultural heritage of the Bucks County region. Named for Doylestown's most famous son, the Pulitzer-Prize winning writer, the Museum has two locations. In Doylestown, the galleries are ensconced within the massive stone walls that were part of the Bucks County Jail.

Animals on the Loose! A Mercer Menagerie - Join Henry Mercer’s favorite dog, Rollo, on a hands-on, interactive adventure in search of “escaped” animal artifacts from the museum’s collection. Along the way, children will encounter a curious collection of creatures – owl-shaped andirons, rocking horses, pottery dogs, rabbit chocolate molds, an alligator hand puppet, and many more. Designed especially for children ages 3 to 8.
